COATINGS - MARINE AND PROTECTIVE
|
Ships are exposed to very harsh conditions. Marine coatings have to protect metallic surfaces from corroding under these extremely aggressive conditions.
Today marine coatings formulators are challenged by environment issues, and providing cost savings without sacrificing quality. Shipyards have to focus more and more on the process costs rather than on the raw material costs (e.g. paint).
Traditionally, shipyards use various application techniques for decks, superstructures, upper-water and under-water parts, and ballast tanks. If that practice aims at using the better price/quality coating for each part, it does not take into account the numerous primers (10-15) used and the cost associated to this process. The use of a universal primer or at least a reduce amount can safe substantially on process costs mainly if associated with fast and all season cure. A universal primer can reduce complexity and increase productivity through standardizing paint application procedures.
The industry is also changing dramatically since the introduction of double-hull tankers. This has provided an increased potential for corrosion. Larger surfaces are exposed to corrosion and maintenance is more difficult to handle and therefore more expensive. The need to protect the ship surfaces against corrosion at the new building yard is therefore crucial. The coatings based on Cardolite phenalkamines show outstanding anti-corrosion properties. Cardolite Phenalkamines fast cure epoxy resins even at very low temperatures (under 0 °C) while keeping a workable pot life.
This technology can therefore be used all the year round.
